The Long-Range Working Van

Can an electric van carry one tonne for 400 real miles without becoming an enormous battery on wheels?

Ford's extended-range E-Transit is quoted at up to 249 miles, and up to 1,484 kg payload in the enhanced-battery range — figures that may refer to different configurations. Tesla currently promotes the Semi rather than a production Transit-class van. The question is therefore still open.

The phrase that matters is real-world laden range. A van advertised at 500 miles in ideal test conditions is less useful than one that reliably achieves 400 miles with a tonne on board in a British winter.

The real invention

Fitting twice as many batteries probably will not work. It adds weight, cost, tyre load and charging time, and consumes the payload it was meant to carry.

At typical large-van consumption, 500 miles could require roughly 200–250 kWh of usable battery. That is potentially too heavy and too expensive for a conventional 3.5-tonne van. The programme has to investigate weight class, battery technology and aerodynamic efficiency rather than conceal that difficulty.

Make the problem the moat

One Fleet can collect the evidence manufacturers tend to simplify. The problem itself becomes the moat.

  • Energy use empty versus laden.
  • Motorway versus urban consumption.
  • Winter degradation.
  • Heating demand.
  • Elevation and headwinds.
  • Payload carried but never needed.
  • Charging delays and broken chargers.
  • How often drivers actually require 300, 400 or 500 miles.

That evidence may show the best invention is not one fixed 500-mile van, but a modular architecture — or a removable long-range energy module fitted only when the work requires it.
